Reflection

This semester, I have worked on a source-based essay, inquiry-based research essay, and compositions in two genres project. The course outcomes that were visible in my writings were: locating research sources in the CCNY library database and evaluating them for credibility, accuracy, timelessness, and bias, recognizing and practicing key rhetorical terms and strategies in writing situations, and understanding and using print and digital technologies to address a range of audiences. In my source-based essay, I used the CCNY library database to find various sources about the effects of social media on students. I found four different article sources: a newspaper article, a magazine article, a scholarly article, and a web source. When evaluating each source for credibility, the newspaper article and scholarly article were credible because they were peer-reviewed by other academics before publication and the magazine article was credible because it was published by Forbes, a reliable and well-known magazine. On the other hand, the web source was not as credible because it was not a known blog site. I also did a rhetorical analysis for the sources and identified the source’s author, audience, purpose, tone, genre, medium, stance, rhetorical appeals, exigence, and constraint. This is visible in my essay from the categorized sections of rhetorical strategies. In my inquiry-based research essay, I used the CCNY library database and the internet to research sources about my topic on parent involvement with censorship in schools. When evaluating my sources, I found that they are credible because they were peer-reviewed and are educational websites. I also did a rhetorical analysis of the sources which allowed me to use evidence to covey the information about censorship and my opinion that censorship in schools has a negative effect on students and teachers. Lastly, my compositions in two genres project demonstrated how I used rhetorical strategies in my Instagram post and brochure in order to convey the negative aspects of censorship in schools to my intended audience, students and teachers. I also understood how to use print and digital to address a range of audiences because an Instagram post can grab the attention of young students who are on social media often and a brochure can grab the attention of an older audience like teachers who can find a brochure in the school. Overall, these course outcomes make me reflect on my skills in writing before this semester compared to now. I improved a lot as a writer and will continue to use what I had learned in my future writings.
